I never thought I'd see those monsters again.

[The feed flickers on to show one of the Barge's latest Wardens. He's messing with a model of one of those robots, smiling down at it. There's a hint of sadness to it, for anyone who pays attention enough.]

That was one of those... breaches, huh? Bloody mind-trip is what it was. Kaiju and Jaegers... Felt like I'd gone back in time...

Anyone get hurt? Those bastards were bloody nightmares to kill, even with Jaegers. It got to the point where we were losing the war... [A slight snort.] ...But that doesn't matter. If anyone's hurt, or coughin' up blue stuff? Let me know, I know how to handle that stuff.

[ Lloyd vaguely recognizes the guy from the breach. One of the vets, who was kind of a big deal. Herc something? Lloyd was just a rookie, though, and he doubts the guy remembers him. ]

We made it out alright. [ Just barely. ] No blue stuff.

You're actually from that world? With the kaijus?

[oldmanstriker]

Yeah. Strangely, the breach was better than home.

[If they had as many pilots back home, they might not have had to risk so much on Operation Pitfall.]

Glad to hear it, mate. Kaiju Blue's nasty stuff.

Yeah, no kidding, man. Everything about those things was pretty fuckin' nasty.

[ A lot of the memories from that world have dimmed from his mind by now, but he still knows that kaiju blood is bad news. ]

How was it better than home?

[oldmanstriker]

More people. We were getting kinda desperate leadin' up to the end of the war.

Did you manage to come out on top, in the end?

[ He hopes that's the case. 'End of the war' sounds kind of promising, at least. ]

That's where you come from?

Yep. Things were a bit different, though. I was an active pilot until recently, and I was never based outta Tokyo's Shatterdome.

It always changes about, so that everyone can be together, for one reason or another.

Guess that's what we get for roamin' about the multiverse, eh?

It's not so bad.

Couple deaths, but most are fine. Death doesn't work the same here, if anyone hasn't explained it to you already.

Still, death by Kaiju ain't bloody pretty. Doesn't matter if you come back after it or not.

Death in general isn't pretty; it's not art. But at least here it isn't permanent, that's all.

Yeah. I heard about that.

There's gotta be some kinda catch or somethin'. Not really had a chance to read up on it yet.

Yeah, kind of a catch. You end up feeling really shitty for a week or two. Still beats actually staying dead though, right?

You've seen that stuff before? Where?

Back home. Kinda hard to forget stuff like that.

Did you pilot a robot?

[oldmanstriker]

Yeah. For ten years.

Cool. Did you like it?

I liked drifting.

That was your world? [She can't help the fascination in her voice.] ...Or a version, anyway. [They still don't know if it's some kind of illusion, or a true alternate reality, or something else entirely.]

...How was it going, before you came here?

[oldmanstriker]

We closed the breach.

[But there was no guarantee it would stay closed.]

[That draws a grin, bright and hopeful. She doesn't know if that Barbara truly exists or not, but a world saved - that's always good news.]

Good. You ever figure out what caused it? [That's the only way they can predict it, to know if it's gone for good, to prevent it from happening again.]

[oldmanstriker]

They wanted to invade. The creators of the Kaiju. Tried a few million years ago, but the planet was too green... We basically terraformed it by ruining our atmosphere.

[Of course, by saying they tried before means they can try again. Sealing one breach doesn't mean another won't open.]

[bodilesswarrior]

[She can't help but laugh, low and wry and a little bitter.] Of course we did.

What else do you know about them? Is there any way to attack the source?
