Name: Hercules Hansen
PB: Max Martini
Journal: [personal profile] oldmanstriker
Age: 44
Appearance: Herc Hansen is 6'1", lean and muscular, with a rugged edge of a man who has been fighting for the past few years of his life. His posture is straight, solid, trained, and There is no doubt that Herc Hansen is a trained soldier. His hair is reddish in colour and cut close in military style. He's not overly fastidious in keeping shaved, and sports a short stubble. He's known to fiddle with the wedding ring on his right hand.
History: Herc Hansen @ The Pacific Rim Wiki
Powers/Talents: Herc is described as a born fighter and career soldier. A graduate of the Jaeger Academy, Hercules Hansen has piloted every mark Jaeger that has been in production, from the first Mark-I's through to the Mark-V Striker Eureka. He has great mental co-ordination, as piloting a Jaeger involves "drifting," or mind-melding, with another person. He doesn't get distracted from the task at hand, and is able to concentrate on one thing at a time. His physical prowess is exceptional, being able to fight in a myriad of hand-to-hand and armed combat, so those skills can be transferred to fighting in a Jaeger. It is hinted that Herc was also a pilot in the Australian Air Force.
Personality: There's not a lot to Hercules Hansen on the outside. He projects the air of an experienced soldier, the cool, calm attitude of a seasoned military man.

On the inside is where you have to look.

Since the fourth Kaiju attack in Sydney, Australia, Herc's world was turned upside-down. When the Kaiju, known as Scissure, attacked the city, Herc had a choice. His son, or his wife. He, ultimately, picked his son, meaning his wife, Angela, died in the attack. It was never known exactly what caused her death; the Kaiju, or the nuclear payload used to kill it.

Left to raise his son, Chuck, by himself, Herc also makes the decision, a year afterwards, to join the Pan-Pacific Defence Corps Jaeger Pilot training program. As a result, he never had enough time to raise his son. Something that always weighed heavily on his shoulders.

As Chuck grew up, he, too, joined the Training program, like his father. This was expected, as Herc brought Chuck up in the discipline of the program, and he was raised around Jaegers and watching his dad fight Kaiju. It wasn't as simple as following in his father's footsteps, however.

As his son grew up, Herc received a lot of resentment and distance from his son. Chuck grew up brash, cocky, always wanting to one-up his fellow Rangers, including his father. Herc suspects that it's because Chuck thought that his father had let his mother die, alas, he would never know.

Chuck and Herc Hansen were found to be "Drift Compatible," meaning they were capable of the mental link required to pilot Jaegers. They were assigned to the first, and last, Mark V Jaeger Striker Eureka. As a result, the father and son got to look in each other's heads.

When it came for the final mission, the mission to stop the Kaiju coming into our world, Chuck was selected for the, almost certain, suicide mission in Striker Eureka with Marshall Stacker Pentecost. It's here, where Herc thought that his son was going to die, that he would never see him again, that he decided to confront Chuck.

The upshot of drifting with someone, however, is that Chuck already knew what his dad was going to say. Herc still feels bad, however, for all the time he didn't spend with his son. In his own words, he never knew "whether to give him a hug, or a kick up the arse." He obviously knows which of the two he would prefer doing.

Outside of his family life, however, Hercules Hansen is a respected Ranger, being one of the longest serving, next to Marshall Stacker Pentecost. He's piloted every mark of Jaeger produced by the PPDC and, despite his age, still meets the mark. He's respectful of his other pilots, showing sympathy for their losses when necessary, but not losing sight of the objective. He doesn't show any patience for slacking, helping Pentecost keep Newton Geiszler and Hermann Gottleib under control. He's clearly seen as Pentecost's second-in-command, and proven by the way he assumes control of the Hong Kong Shatterdome after Pentecost's passing.

He is not above risking his own life for others. In the fight against Leatherback and Otachi, two Category 4 Kaiju, he and his son fend off Leatherback with flare guns. Most notable was the way he introduced the plan: "There's only us between that ugly bastard and a city of ten million people. Now, we've got a choice here, we can sit and wait, or we can take these flare guns and do something really stupid."

His dedication to defending that city, even when his arm was broken from disconnecting from his Conn-Pod harness and Striker being knocked by the Kaiju, even when Striker Eureka was rendered inoperable, and even knowing that they might die, and just serve as a distraction to prevent the Kaiju from running rampant on Hong Kong like it's partner, is a perfect representation of the type of man he is.

In summary, Herc Hansen is not a man you want to get on the bad side of. He's fully able to hold his own, and doesn't stand for anything against his principles. On the flip-side, he could be a valuable ally for the same reasons. Despite the turbulence in his family life, he won't let that distract him, and always gets the job done, even if it means putting his own feelings aside.
Why would your character be chosen? What makes Herc unique is his ability to focus on the task at hand, and do anything to get the job done. He's, inherently, a good person and tries to cope with saving the world and dealing with family.
How much does your character know about nonhumans? Herc has only had run-ins with the Kaiju, gigantic inter-dimensional monsters made to invade the planet. He, and other members of his world, know little about the Kaiju other than the fact that they're the cloned attack dogs for a group of inter-dimensional invaders, planning on terraforming Earth for their consumption. They don't know much about these masters, however.
Why this character: Herc is interesting. There are many aspects of his personality to explore, and he also seems the most adaptable. He should settle in fine

3. Original Character Information
If your character is a canon character, skip this and move on to the fourth section.
Name: Character's name (and nickname, if they go by one)
PB: Who are you using for your character image? If icons are not uploaded to your character journal, please also include a link to an appropriate icon.
Journal: Link us to your character journal
Age: For characters like vampires or elves, include actual age and how old they look.
Appearance: Tell us about your character's physical appearance. Please also include any information that a person could tell from examining your character, such as posture, poise, frequent ticks.
Home World: Where does your character come from? Tell us about that place.
History: Please give us a few paragraphs about your characters' history, focusing on significant events that helped shape this character into the person he or she is.
Powers/Talents: If your character has supernatural abilities, list them here. Also include any strong talents or skills your character has.
Personality: This is really the meat of the application. You should get into what distinguishes your character from others. What are their goals? How would other people describe them? What do they desire, what are they afraid of? How do they present themselves, and what do they internalize?
Why would your character be chosen? Give us a sentence or two, guessing why your character might be chosen. Don’t worry about getting too deep or profound. You might pick a unique physical trait or an impressive ability. Just something that would make your character stand out from others in a way that would attract attention. For example, Helen of Troy might be chosen for her beauty. Xander Harris from Buffy might be chosen for his empathy. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter might be chosen for her individuality, or lack of conformity. What makes your character unique?
How much does your character know about nonhumans? This will determine how much information about the Nysgods your character will have the option to bring into the game. For example, we might allow an Albus Dumbledore or a Rupert Giles to know a great deal of information about the Nysgods, while we will probably say that a George Costanza or a Cinderella would never have heard of them. If your character is very familiar with supernatural/alien/demon/etc species, please give us some detail about why they know this information. PLEASE NOTE this information will not affect your character's involvement in the metaplot either way.
Why this character: Why did you decide to play this character? What about them holds your attention? Do you think that you'll be able to keep this character voice and still find them interesting after playing them for awhile?

4. Samples
Please either include a first-person entry that could be your character's first post on The Network, or a third-person prose or action spam sample that could be your character's reaction to arriving in Dagaz. For the other two samples, links to previous character examples are fine.
First-Person: http://dear-mun.dreamwidth.org/8816490.html
Third-Person: The breach was sealed, and Marshall Hercules Hansen of the Hong Kong Shatterdome was pleased, as pleased as everyone else.

The war was over.

The second that they got confirmation the breach was closed, it was over, but there was still that moment when it wasn't known if Raleigh Becket had survived... The second that they knew, Herc turned and gave the order to stop the clock. The War Clock that was reset after every Kaiju attack to give everyone in the dome focus. Stacker's idea. It worked. Not a lot of Stacker's plans didn't.

When both the pilots of Gipsy Danger returned to the Shatterdome, Herc was there, grinning, congratulating the two along with the others. They had stopped a war that had been going on for years, a war humanity was on the border of losing... They had cancelled the apocalypse.

It was a happy sight, and one that Hercules Hansen did his best to slip from unnoticed as soon as he could.

He walked down the hall, back straight, arm still in the sling from the fight with the previous two Kaiju, fiddling with the ring on his right finger and nodding to the few stragglers who were running to congratulate the two heroes. He walks towards the room he shares-- shared --with his son, Chuck, and walks in, closing the door behind him. He doesn't lock it.

He slumps against the door, giving himself a minute, trying to contain the well of emotion bubbling up in him...

...Before he grabs the nearest object, a water jug, and with a yell of pure grief and rage, pitches it against the wall, shattering it.

Max, Chuck and Herc's bulldog, perks up and instantly scrabbles under Chuck's bed as fast as his little legs will let him, whining and crying, as Herc lets out a choked sob, sweeping his arm over the desk nearby and sending the objects scattered across the floor.

A snowglobe featuring Syndney Harbour, something Herc brought along to remind him of what they were protecting, falls from the desk and shatters, water and glitter scattering all over the metal floor. The man himself slowly sinks to the floor of his room, the sobs deepening...

They had won, but he had lost.

First Angela, all those years ago, the wife he sacrificed so his boy could live... who resented him for that decision all these years. And now that boy was dead, along with one of his best friends.

The memory was painful, too painful. He knew when Chuck got into Striker Eureka with Pentecost, he'd never see them again, but that doesn't make it any easier. The memory sticks in him like a hot knife, searing away at his senses.

With his free arm, Herc hugs his leg, burying his face into it and letting it all out.
Third Sample: This is all bloody ridiculous...

[An irritated Australian accent filters through the network. Someone managed to get it working.]

My name is Marshal Hercules Hansen of the Pan-Pacific Defence Corps, Hong Kong Shatterdome, Service number R-HHAN_832.84-G. While I appreciate the healing of my arm, anyone who can help me get back to Earth, I'd be really grateful.

[His voice is still irritated as hell, and someone hasn't yet figured out how to turn the feed off...]

A mate for some alien prince... What a crock of shi-
